project//Magus 2.0! Release

Recommended Posts

Preface

Introducing project//Magus 2.0! the next-generation style for The World BBS! Throughout the history of The World BBS, different styles with different approaches were made. As cherry-picked by gm112 and Rhapsodiac, the best details were merged into one general idea plus with a few additional additions. Support for Internet Explorer is a definite yes with this one, as well! Versions 8+ "should" render fine... if you're still an IE user, that is. Much of the design atrocities made by IPS Inc. have been corrected in this theme. The JavaScript bugfix has been integrated directly into this theme! So if you're set to this theme, then it should work regardless of whether or not you're on gd-u.com or forum.gd-u.com!

So, consider this theme the "Best of the BBS". I would've like to have multiple banners in this theme, but I really didn't get around to making it work. IPBoard doesn't like custom cookie entries and the settings was kind of funky. So it's whatever at this point... Perhaps one day I'll release a minor upgrade to this theme in hopes that it can be added. Finally I would like to say, thank you to everyone, for awesome memories, and to those who still stick around.

I've made the theme available for everyone to use. Also, the attachment function is broken for me on this forum, so I had no choice but to upload it elsewhere. That being said, it would be interesting to see people spin this off!

Oi oi. A pleasure working with you as always my dear chums. Looks and functions absolutely wonderful. A special hats off to gm for his infinite patience. Situations that are as simple as pointing to a screen if we were standing next to one another, easily become trial and error situations that require absolutely immaculate descriptions and specifications in order to convey exactly what we're trying to get across. In the end, we constantly exceed our own expectations.

So 3 cheers for gm, for his dedication, and another 3 cheers for Luke for his support and making this whole thing even possible.

I did nothing once again, but ok o_O lol

But really, what Rhaps has said is so true. Things that should be so very simple can get extremely hard and what should take up 5 minutes can take hours. I'm so glad all the work you two have put into this god of a theme is finally, really here :D lol

Inspires me to get some of the stuff I want to work on out too :uptonogood:

You two, thank you so much for the support and memories. I wish life weren't so hectic because if I had the resources, I would rent out office space and we would form a game design team together. Rhaps, I applaud you in your ability to connect with the technicalities behind making web and game design possible... and you know, this is why I enjoy doing these things. It is one of the only true methods of combining the capabilities of a logical thinker with the artist. Like you said, our capabilities doing rapid development(which is what you're describing) would be unmatched by many almost as if we were a two man army that's capable of trampling down half of the world! It is always a pleasure to do work with you two.

Very awesome GM, and Rhaps.

Loving this theme so much already.

Glad you like it! This theme was made to hopefully resemble the previous themes, but with a beautiful touch and modern-ideas. I love doing work for the BBS and anything that I can do for the lurkers who still come by, I'll be happy to do.

I did nothing once again, but ok o_O lol

Oh shut your mouth, Luke. You are the reason why we became a family. You've impacted my life more than you will ever know and I am forever in-debt to you and many others from this community because of that.

EDIT: By the way, it might be possible for me to release "updates" to this theme. I just realized that IP.Board has an update feature... so, report any suggestions or bugs here! I can already see one oversight with the quoteboxes. This is on IPS Inc's part, there's no padding inbetween each quote box(try making multiple quote boxes next to each other, you'll see what I mean) causing them to sit ontop of each other. It looks plain ugly.

EDIT #2: What do you guys think about

and

http://i.imgur.com/lcF2o.png

... in comparison to how it looks on the site currently?

TODO

  • Move pagination to the blue area. I think it looks better.
  • Correct oversight with status update hook. Anything with 5 comments+ show "Show more comments" button which calls the post_row2 css class. Seriously, who the fuck does the templates for IPS? I want to shoot them.
  • Correct oversight with quote boxes.
    • Add padding... my eyes tell me maybe 3px will do justice on top and bottom.
    • Add alternating colors for quote inside quotes. Research way of doing this effectively within template logic. Shouldn't be too hard.

[*]Correct oversight with custom styled profiles. Use this as a reference: https://forum.gd-u.co...lphina-micaela/

    • Correct oversight w/ custom styled profiles
    • Menu bar could use #141414 on anything regardless if activated or not.
    • Darken any text not part of the content CSS class. (or maybe throw in a hidden border(hidden as in it won't show up on uncustomized profiles) to cover up exposed text to customized background?
    • Make main ipsbox class show shadow all around.
    • Fix font colors on "stats" menu.

[*]Correct oversight with "View New Content" button

    • Inconsistency with template when forum software pulls information for members. It seems IPS wanted to share the CSS classes used for "Online Members". Interestingly enough, they're unused in the current iteration(did I remove them?)
    • Somehow change default to "View new content from last visit" as requested. Might be a simple one liner.

[*]Correct oversight with IE-based DOM hacks.

    • Move IE-based CSS hacks out of main css files to avoid Internet Explorer 10 from loading up the text-shadow based hack while loading text-shadows as well, when they support it.
    • Look into adding a profile option to disable IE-based hacks as they cause slow performance + glitching on 64bit IE7/8(I didn't really look at this as a problem since it's highly unlikely there are still x64 IE7/8 users out there)

    [*]Add banner-switching option

[*]Underline or place some sort of font difference on hyperlinks in post_body CSS class. Otherwise the distinction between URLs and normal text will be impossible to tell until you hover your moues over the link.

[*]Redo the whole entire "setup" with how polls are displayed. It can look tons better.

Please, let me know if there's something I missed.

EDIT #9000: This makes for my 1120th post!! Wooo~

Sometime this weekend I should be able to push out most of these needed changes. So depending on if I can get the patch ready by this sunday, then expect Walnut to have it uploaded probably later next week. That being said, I'll do what I can to find time and get everything pushed in at once.

One more thing, can someone provide some feedback on how I can improve the overall look of this? Anyone with an iPod Touch or iPhone to give me a screenshot of how this theme looks on that device? I've been testing on the Android browser and noticed some padding issues mysteriously popped up due to a simple trick I used to enable gradiants on browsers that don't support CSS3 grads yet.(the background is shifted 1-2 pixels too high it looks like) I know it sounds silly that I care about how this theme looks on a mobile environment when IPS design the "full version" to be touch-unfriendly, but I simply can't stand the fact that there are imperfections even on the mobile platforms.

Lastly. I really don't think there's really more I can "do" to this theme after I finish this without going deeper with the template modifications. I've already done more than several hundred changes to the templates and redid a good chunk of the main CSS file. (This isn't counting the previously javascript-based hacks I wrote in, but now ported to CSS) That being said, the follow-up update will most likely be the last commit I'll do to this theme.

It's unfortunate to say this, but I don't see this theme surviving more than a year due to IPS's internal policy with templates. I would have to make the theme support its own templates and who knows how long that would last before something breaks. Enjoy this new style while it does actually work. :( Hopefully some passer-byer comes and downloads the zip file and maintains it after I'm done with it.

Update! This is an in-between / 90% finished version of 2.0.1 (There were more changes, but I'm too tired to really type them out. ). I figured I would just put this out now incase if I turn into lazyman again, so hopefully this just gets applied.

http://www.mediafire...40eawzvbnkseean <-- main theme file

http://www.mediafire...amd01splmdlvjjx <-- replacements

If you are updating an existing version of this theme ontop of another, only the main theme file is required as I hadn't changed anything else quite yet. I'm very pleased with how nicely the customized profile view turned out. Thanks goes out to Melphina for having a customized profile. If that weren't the case, then there would've been a good chance that I wouldn't have ever noticed how broken the profile view was.

I'll post a status update when I receive confirmation that this has been applied to GD-U.

EDIT: As usual, the testbed is open for a tiny bit. If you want to see bleeding-edge changes, feel free to go here: http://174.100.46.129/forum/

It might not be up all of the time, however. Keep this in mind!

why on earth would anyone in their right minds use ip board? XP

I used to say that until I tried IP.Board 3.x.. it really is an amazing piece of software if you ignore its shortcomings. And... it was a huge step-up from SMF.

I dunno why people seriously used IPB2

IPB1 was cool because it was decent software considering it was free. IPB2 was (fairly) expensive and had nothing going for it at all. IPB3 is pretty awesome fo sho
